The Macau Association of Composers , Authors & Publishers (MACA) held a Seminar titled Macau Music, Cultural and Creative Industries on the fourth floor of Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Center on November 29, 2011. Following the theme of last year, industry practitioners continue to discuss on the future of music development in Macau.
Guests at the seminar include Elton Yeong, CEO of Composer and Authors Society of Hong Kong Ltd., as well as local singers and writers. MACA also invited Zoo Man, Hong Kong renowned composer and producer, Cheang Chi Tat, local renowned radio host and John Ho and other local musicians as guest speakers to exchange views and discuss with participants.
MACA Chairman Ung Kuoc Iang said in his speech that he was pleased to have witnessed that royalties were allocated to MACA’s local members for the first time and that its member base is increasing steadily. Regarding the royalty income of Public Performance Licensing, MACA successfully received the majority from the large-scale concerts held in Macau, thanks to the support of the related government departments of Macao SAR who played a leading role. Ung is eager to accelerate the infiltration the copyright issues to a community level in the near future. In 2011, MACA has organized copyright talks for several local schools to raise young people’s awareness of intellectual property rights and enhance their understanding of how to use music legally.
Besides, MACA will accelerate the pace of the music with high-volume users to discuss matters relating to royalties. In addition, MACA will continue to organize talks to the community to explain how to legally use music and enhance their understanding of copyrights. MACA will continuously pay efforts on copyright education for the young people. MACA expects to establish scholarships, music performance awards for students and organize activities to stimulate creativity by inviting music composers and producers to produce music albums for teenagers.
Ung also thanked the support of the guests who has been giving guidance and advices to the association, he is particularly thankful for CASH’s support. With the support and assistance from CASH, MACA was able to relieve the Macau government departments of major legal concerns. Ung said that MACA definitely has more challenges to face in future but he is confident that they will be overcome. He hoped that its mission and direction in seeking for the rights of its members will have access to the community's recognition and support.
CASH Chief Executive Officer Elton Yeung was invited as a keynote speaker at the event to explain to the participants the friendly interaction with members and working together with MACA for the intellectual property rights to involve more music talents in the creative world.
In addition, MACA also invited speakers including Zoo Man, Cheang Chi Tat, and John Ho. Topics include how to encourage people to respect music, musicians and their work, how to enhance the interest level of local young people in music, and how to locate the creativity of music and the practical value music brings.
During the Q & A session, through comprehensive interaction among the speakers and the audiences, the participants discussed about the future development of Macau’s music industries and copyright issues. In addition, MACA held an evening live concert on the same day. Six local bands presented live performances and they include Boogie Engineering, CONTS, Black Sheep, J'S & I, The Roof, LAVY.
