MACA Seminar on "Intellectual Property: Innovating for a Better Future "

Macau, 5 December 2022 – "Organized by Macau Association of Composers, Authors & Publishers (MACA) the MACA Seminar "Intellectual Property: Innovating for a Better Future" was held at the Fundação Rui Cunha on 5 December,2022. The main purpose of this Seminar is to improve the public’s awareness of music and copyright, that the public can further understand the importance of protecting the copyright of music creators and legal protection of intellectual property rights, thus, promote the development of local original music creations.

Representatives from Intellectual Property Management Department, as well as intellectual property experts, scholars, and legal professionals were invited as speakers to the event, including DENG Yuhua, Counsellor of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) office in China; Benjamin Ng, Regional Director for Asia-Pacific Region of International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC); Zhu Yanzheng, Deputy Director of Music Copyright Society of China (MCSC); Rui José da Cunha, Founder of Rui Cunha Foundation and Ung Kuoc Iang, Chief Executive Officer of Macau Association of Composers, Authors & Publishers (MACA). MACA echoed the call for the World Intellectual Property Day 2022, the speakers shared theoretical knowledge and experience.

Ung Kuoc Iang shared the recent innovative activities organized by MACA to protect intellectual property rights. In order to raise awareness of music copyright and intellectual property rights in all sectors of society, only by using music legally and maintaining music copyright together that we can promote more music creators to develop new cogitation and create more music works for Macao. With the rapid development of the digital age, the collective rights touched by the public's daily activities are ubiquitous. Therefore, Rui José da Cunha, founder of the Rui Cunha Foundation, shared the copyright law about the digital era. Benjamin Ng introduced the opportunities for Intellectual Property Development Opportunities in Hengqin cooperation zone in the future and promote the strengthening of cooperation and management of collective management institutions in China and Macao, so that can be protected by intellectual property rights while developing in the future. In order to better understand the amendments to the copyright law in China, Zhu Yanzheng shared in detail for the main content of the third amendment of the copyright law of the People's Republic of China. In order to enhance public awareness of the World Intellectual Property Organization, DENG Yuhua introduced the scope of work of the China Office of the World Intellectual Property Organization. All the experts and scholars on the scene also discussed the above issues and looked for relevant solutions.

During the event, MACA CEO, Ung Kuoc Iang thanks all the speakers for their preparation for this seminar and welcome all guests and representatives for attending and making joint efforts to promote intellectual property rights in Macao. The guests attended the seminar included: Wong Kuan Wai, Acting Head of Intellectual Property Rights Investigation Division of Customs Service of the Macao SAR; Dai Baisheng, Professor and Coordinator of Music Program of Macao Polytechnic University; Edmund Wong, Chairman of The Association of Advertising Agents of Macau; Choi Ming Lee, Officer of the Culture and Recreation Committee of Macau General Union of Neighborhood Associations.
